Fostering FAQ

Fostering is bringing a cat or kittens into your home and taking care of them until they are adopted.

We work around your schedule. Some fosters take in a nursing mom and kittens for a couple of months; others can only commit to a couple of weeks. We will always try to match you with a cat that fits your timeline.

Most TCR foster cats and kittens come from the Trenton Animal Shelter. Some come from our TNR efforts if they are friendly. Once you complete the foster sign-up, we will be in touch and arrange the transfer into your care.

Absolutely — many of our fosters have pets of their own. You will need a dedicated space to keep your foster separate from your resident pets until they are ready to be introduced. We do ask that your resident pets are current on all vaccinations.

You would be responsible for food (or formula for kittens) and litter, though we can help with providing food. TCR covers all veterinary and medical expenses.

Generally yes, but cats coming from the shelter or the streets sometimes arrive with a mild respiratory infection (kitty cold). This is easily treated with a 10-day course of antibiotics. TCR will train you on how to give medication and provide everything you need.

TCR hosts regular adoption events at pet stores where fosters bring their cats. We also place cats in pet stores for about a month at a time for greater exposure. All adoptable cats are listed on our website, and we can arrange meet-and-greets between fosters and interested adopters.

We have experienced foster mentors available by phone or email for advice and guidance. You are never on your own — someone is always available to help.

Life happens, and we understand. If your circumstances change — travel, illness, or anything else — just let us know as soon as possible and we will arrange to place the cat with another foster or back into our care. We will never leave you stuck.
